Our Services

Phonological Disorders

The term phonological disorders refers to a child’s difficulty understanding the sound system and speech rules of our language that other children seem to acquire naturally.

These disorders are broader in scope and more complex than simple articulation deficits. A child with phonological disorders may mispronounce a sound in certain words, yet pronounce it clearly in others.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an area of clinical practice that addresses the needs of individuals with significant and complex communication disorders characterized by impairments in speech-language production and/or comprehension, including spoken and written modes of communication.

AAC uses a variety of techniques and tools, including picture communication boards, line drawings, speech-generating devices (SGDs), tangible objects, manual signs, gestures, and finger spelling, to help the individual express thoughts, wants and needs, feelings, and ideas.

Language Disorders

A language disorder is an impairment that makes it hard for someone to find the right words and form clear sentences when speaking. It can also make it difficult to understand what another person says. A child may have difficulty understanding what others say, may struggle to put thoughts into words, or both.

Literacy Skills

Literacy skills are all the skills needed for reading and writing. They include such things as awareness of the sounds of language, awareness of print, and the relationship between letters and sounds. Other literacy skills include vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension.

Social Communication

Social communication is the use of language in social contexts. It encompasses social interaction, social cognition, pragmatics, and language processing.

Social communication skills include the ability to vary speech style, take the perspective of others, understand and appropriately use the rules for verbal and nonverbal communication, and use the structural aspects of language (e.g., vocabulary, syntax, and phonology) to accomplish these goals.

Speech Sound Disorder

Speech sound disorders is an umbrella term referring to any combination of difficulties with perception, motor production, and/or the phonological representation of speech sounds and speech segments (including phonotactic rules that govern syllable shape, structure, and stress, as well as prosody) that impact speech intelligibility.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is an uncommon speech disorder in which a child has difficulty making accurate movements when speaking.

In CAS, the brain struggles to develop plans for speech movement. With this disorder, the speech muscles aren't weak, but they don't perform normally because the brain has difficulty directing or coordinating the movements.

To speak correctly, your child's brain has to learn how to make plans that tell his or her speech muscles how to move the lips, jaw and tongue in ways that result in accurate sounds and words spoken with normal speed and rhythm.

Feeding and Swallowing

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are the primary providers for swallowing and feeding services.  All children must learn to eat through a variety of steps.  Most children learn these steps naturally, however some require additional help due to a number of causes.

Fluency

Fluency is the aspect of speech production that refers to continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort. Stuttering, the most common fluency disorder, is an interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by repetitions (sounds, syllables, words, phrases), sound prolongations, blocks, interjections, and revisions, which may affect the rate and rhythm of speech. These disfluencies may be accompanied by physical tension, negative reactions, secondary behaviors, and avoidance of sounds, words, or speaking situations.

Our Programs

Our state and community programs offer leading therapy options across the region.

Kentucky First Steps

Kentucky First Steps is a state-run program that provides supports and services for families with children birth to three who have developmental delays or disabilities. Research shows that the first three years of a child's life are the most important time for developing and learning.  By providing needed services and supports during this time, families will be able to help their children with special needs develop to their full potential, and may decrease the need for additional help later in life.

For more information on the Program to go Kentucky First Steps Website.

As providers under Kentucky's First Steps program, we provide services to children ages birth to 3 years old at little to no cost to the families.  We are able to work hand in hand with families to aid them in encouraging speech and language development in their children.

If you would like our services through the First Steps program you can contact your counties Point of Entry office here.  Parents are able to refer their own children but another option would be making an appointment with your child's pediatrician.

After the referral process a screening and evaluation will take place.  Should your child qualify for services, you will be able to pick your preferred Speech-Language Pathology provider.  Feel free to request our company Interactive Therapy Services, PLLC. or by name Jen Vice or Melanie Asbury.

Ohio's Help Me Grow

Help Me Grow is Ohio’s evidenced-based parent support program that encourages early prenatal and well-baby care, as well as parenting education to promote the comprehensive health and development of children. Help Me Grow System includes Central Intake, Help Me Grow Home Visiting and Help me Grow Early Intervention.

Making a referral to Help Me Grow is the first and easy step for parents who have questions or concerns about their infant or child. One referral to Help Me Grow opens the door to many programs that support families including Early Intervention, Home Visiting, Moms and Babies First.

If you are not the child’s parent, you may still make a referral. Help Me Grow will first contact the child’s parent before proceeding. Click Here to complete the referral form.

Early Intervention (EI) is a statewide system that provides coordinated early intervention services to parents of eligible children under the age of three with developmental delays or disabilities. EI is grounded in the philosophy that young children learn best from familiar people in familiar settings. Every family served in EI will have a local EI team that consists of a service coordinator, service providers, and your family. Your team works with you in your home or other places you and your family spend time to develop a coordinated plan called an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). You and your team will work through your IFSP plan to use your existing supports and resources—and build upon them—to learn to enhance your child’s learning and development. For more information, please click here.

To get more information about Early Intervention (EI) in your county, contact your contract manager or Family and Children First Council coordinator by clicking here.

Beckman Oral Motor

The Beckman Oral Motor Protocol is an intervention that utilizes assisted movement and stretch reflexes to activate muscle contraction, build strength and improve range of motion in the lips, jaw, tongue and soft palate. It assesses the response to pressure, movement, range, and strength, and variety and control of movement.

It is very beneficial for children that can not follow verbal commands due to motor planning and/or a cognitive deficit. This can also be used with infants as a highly effective tool for improving oral motor skills to support feeding and speech development.

Beckman Oral Motor Intervention can be used to facilitate both speech production and feeding skills including breast and bottle feeding.  Additionally, this technique can help with tooth grinding, drooling and hyper/hyposensitivity. Techniques that are used are presented in a playful, gentle manner, so that all children feel respected. Emphasis is placed on providing parent training so that the techniques can be carried over into the home for maximum benefit.

PROMPT

PROMPT Therapy is a unique philosophy and approach to assessment and treatment of speech delays or disorders. We understand that being a caregiver for someone with a speech disorder can at times be difficult and frustrating. It is often difficult to know whom to contact and which evaluation results really reflect the challenges your family member is facing.

PROMPT is most known for being a tactile-kinesthetic (touch and feel) approach where an SLP places his/her hands on the client’s face to guide his/her jaw, lips, and tongue to move correctly to form words.

Continue reading about PROMPT on their website.

If you want to know if PROMPT could help your child contact us and we would be happy to help you.
